For A New Generation
These plants have long died.
Their lives were short.
Strained by the cold and the heat
and the perpetual thirst of the slope,
they knew not of a haze or a dewdrop.
They never ripened, never bent
under the weight of a cluster of fruits.
Burnt by the sun and the wind,
their fibrous stems still stand
rooted in the dry cracks of the rock,
lifeless but in wait
of the brief desert spring.
When the rain comes again
their parched fruits will burst,
and a handful of avid seeds
will jump from the remains
to hatch in the moist and grow roots
for a new generation.
A una nueva generación
Estas plantas murieron hace tiempo.
Sus vidas fueron breves.
Hostigadas por el frío y el calor
y la perpetua sed de la cuesta
no supieron de niebla o rocío.
Nunca maduraron, nunca cedieron
bajo el peso de un racimo.
Quemados por el sol y el viento
sus tallos fibrosos siguen en pie,
enraizados en las grietas de la roca,
sin vida aunque esperando
por la fugaz primavera del desierto.
Cuando vuelvan las lluvias
sus calcinados frutos estallarán
y un puñado de semillas ávidas
saltará de los restos
para abrirse en la humedad y dar raíces
a una nueva generación.
